Replacing rotten subfloor under toilet. How thick is the floor, typically?

It was built in ‘78 in New England. I’m tackling this project myself ’cause I haven’t got the $$ to pay somebody to do it for me.

I already pulled the toilet up and most of the vinyl. It’s probably about 1 1/2 cu.ft. of the floor that’s water damaged. There are drip marks in the kitchen below it, but you can’t see through.

I read in another forum that the floor is probably 3/8" thick, but that doesn’t sound right to me. The suggestion was to use a circular saw and take off a bit at a time; all the rotten stuff to the nearest joist. I understand the bit about checking the floor joists for damage and sistering joists as necessary. I’m more concerned with ripping the wet stuff up. Any suggestions? All I own is a jig saw so I’ll probably rent – or buy – a circular saw. I’m more concerned with the thickness of the sub-floor ’cause I don’t want to cut too deep.

Also, how far apart are the joists supposed to be?

Does it require a permit in MA to replace a sink & toilet? Window/Door trim? Baseboard?

We recently had work done on the house for which permits were gotten and completed (roof / windows / guttters / doors / siding).
We also had work done inside that didn’t require permits (floors, kitchen cabinets, granite counters).
But there were other things which we’re wondering if permits should have been gotten…
1) Replaced sink/toilet in a bathroom (husband did sink, gen’l contractor did toilet).
2) The new windows/doors required new trim inside (our cabinet maker did this). I liked it better than the old, so had him replace all the window/door trim and baseboards in those 3 rooms. A friend said this should have had a permit! (That seems hard to believe).
3) Sink replaced when granite counters put in
4) Changed from hot-water baseboard heat to hydro-air system with original boiler and new AC / heat-pump duct work (done by a heating / AC company).

We’re concerned because occupancy permit issues turned up (from 25 years before we bought the house) which we are now having resolved. We’re having all the inspections which should have been done 25 years ago, and I’m wondering if we’ll have troubles from this recent work that may or may not have req’d permits.

All our contracts for work done included that they were responsible for all needed permits.
I did contact the general contractor who said everything should be fine, those are minor things, they dont care.
Should I contact the heating company? He must have changed SOME plumbing, since hot water now goes to the attic when it didn’t before.
I’m probably paranoid, but don’t want problems with the building inspector.

What are the rights of someone filing a lawsuit against a contracting company for workmanship?

I own my own contracting company and have always had nothing but satisfied clients except for this one family. This job was funded by the state because this guy is in a wheelchair and needed a more accessible bathroom. To put things short this job was hell! The guy in the wheelchair threatened my contractor, they wanted to make changes to the materials (toilet, shower, ect.) after the government approved the bid, they picked the flooring and paint and after it was installed said it wasn’t what they wanted, they even damaged property that was supposed to be installed because they didn’t like it. The job was for 10,000 we didn’t get paid for labor at all, now they want to sue us for 25,000! They originally had 4 complaints and I have documented that we offered to go back and fix it or even pay for another contractor to fix it. I didn’t agree but I wanted them off my back, they refused. Now they are saying they are going to the media to slander my companys name and suing us.
Oh and by the way their list of four complaints is now up to 75! We do have documentation that we contacted the state about them destroying the flooring, the sink, and some accessories but I am worried that nobody will believe us because this guy is in a wheelchair. I can’t have my company on TV for doing bad work! What can we do???
The total cost of the bathroom was ,000 we got paid ,000 for materials which are all in the bathroom.
