Gross Profit Margins can range from zero to about 60%. This is a really difficult question for our industry. There are many in our business who do not understand what their overhead is and do not build in enough gross profit to recoup this and still have a little left for net profit.
I am a painting contractor in the Washington DC area. We are an accredited painting contractor with the PDCA (Painting and Decorating contractors of America). It is my belief that the average contractor needs to keep their profit margin in the 45-55% range for a residential painting contractor. This is likely not the average though, as many come and go in our business due to poor management.

I hope this helps.
May I ask why you are wanting to know?
